My name is Sonja,
it’s nice to meet you.
I grew up in the Midwest, spent many years living in Seattle, and have since returned to my roots in Iowa. Before becoming a therapist, I worked as a social worker providing intensive case management for individuals living with mental illness. I decided to become a social worker when I was twelve years old, and while my roles have evolved over time, my commitment to helping people improve their lives has remained the same.
I specialize in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an evidence-based approach that teaches concrete tools to regulate emotions, reduce overwhelm, and build a life that feels more stable and meaningful. DBT offers practical, everyday strategies for staying present, communicating effectively, managing intense feelings, and making choices that move you toward the life you want. I practice DBT in both individual therapy sessions and through group therapy sessions, which help us learn from one another and feel less alone.
I offer a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space for you to feel heard, respected, and empowered to grow. I am deeply committed to the DBT approach because I have witnessed the profound impact these skills have had in helping people build lives that are meaningful and aligned with their core values. And I want that for you too.
I value humor and authenticity, and I bring both into my work as a therapist. I believe that even in the midst of doing meaningful, sometimes difficult work, there’s space for genuine connection and moments of lightness.
In my personal life, I love traveling and exploring new places. When I’m near the ocean, you’ll likely find me boogie boarding, and when I’m landlocked, I enjoy stand-up paddle boarding.
